The City of Brownsville MSW Landfill is a carefully engineered facility designed to assure proper disposal of municipal solid waste. With a size of 275 acres, the Landfill serves the citizens of Brownsville as well as its surrounding areas. In fiscal 2009-10 accepted 291,076.03 tons of waste, or more than 900 tons a day.  The landfill meets all requirements of the law and has approximately 38 years of life expectancy remaining.

In 2010, the City Landfill achieved feat which has not been accomplished by any regional facility in decades. During its annual comprehensive inspection, the State of Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) awarded the facility a perfect score.  

The Brownsville Municipal Landfill is available at no charge for the accepted waste listed below to "BFI" clients paying for collection services through P.U.B.Customers must present their P.U.B. statement of charges for verification of "BFI" account. Disposal of four (4) tires is also free with verified account.

ACCEPTED HOUSEHOLD/RESIDENTIAL WASTE
  • Normal Household Waste 
  • Yard Waste (grass, leaves, branches, trunks)

  • Old Furniture & Bedding 
  • Refrigerators & A/C with written certification stating that all refrigerant has been evacuated.
ACCEPTED CONSTRUCTION WASTE
Regular Landfill waste fees will apply to any renovation, construction, or demolition waste which would include:

  • Windows 
  • Plywood Sheets or Remnants 
  • Doors 
  • Sheetrock 
  • Stairs 
  • Carpeting 
  • Tar-paper

  • NO EXCEPTIONS!!! 
PROHIBITED WASTE
The following prohibited wastes will not be allowed:

  • Any Hazardous Wastes 
  • Closed Drums 
  • Explosives 
  • Oil (A Used Oil Recycling Containers available at the landfill) 
  • Oil Filters (Send to Firestone Tire & Service Co., O'Reilly Auto Parts, Pep Boys, or Walmart Tire & Lube Center and Sam's Club) 
  • Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCBs) 
  • Car or Truck Batteries (Send to automotive centers) 
  • Liquids 
  • Wet Paint 
  • Class 1 Industrial Waste 
  • Hot Loads 
  • And the following special wastes without prior approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and accompanied with relevant analytic test results and MSDS documents: 
  • Drugs, contaminated foods, or contaminated beverages, other than those contained in normal household waste 
  • Incinerator Ash 
  • Light Ballasts and/or Small Capacitors containing PCB compounds 
  • Septic Tank pumpings 
  • Commercial or Industrial waste water treatment

SPECIAL WASTE 
Special Waste is material that, because of physical characteristics, chemical makeup, or biological nature requires special handling procedures and permitting, or poses an unusual threat to human health, equipment, property, or the environment. 

The following special wastes may be accepted for disposal without prior written authorization from the TCEQ: 

  • Medical waste which has been treated in accordance with TCEQ regulations 
  • Dead animals and/or slaughterhouse waste 
  • Empty containers which have been used for pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or rodenticides provided that the containers are triple-rinsed and rendered unusable 
  • Regulated (Friable) and Non-regulated (Non-friable) asbestos-containing materials (Generator is required to give at least 24 hr notice prior to delivery of friable asbestos) 
  • Municipal hazardous waste from a conditionally exempt small quantity generator provided the amount of waste does not exceed 220 Lbs.  per month per generator 
  • Sludge, grease trap waste, or grit trap waste from municipal sources if the material has been, treated or processed and has been certified to contain no free liquids 
  • Petroleum contaminated soils that are accompanied by analytic data (including signed laboratory results. chain-of-custody information, Quality Control Data, and a sampling plan) as required by the TCEQ 
  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) Bulk 

Prior to receiving the above types of waste, sufficient documentation shall be provided to demonstrate all TCEQ requirements are met. Waste profile forms are available at the Landfill Scale House.
